Technical Principles of Methylcellulose (MC)

Methylcellulose is an important chemical substance with wide applications in various industrial sectors and daily life. It is a white or off-white fibrous or granular powder, odorless and tasteless, hygroscopic, and dissolves in water to form a transparent, viscous solution. Methylcellulose belongs to the nonionic cellulose ether class, and the methyl groups in its chemical structure endow it with unique physical and chemical properties.

Methylcellulose is produced by chemically modifying natural cellulose. This modification process allows methylcellulose to retain some of the properties of natural cellulose while acquiring new functions. For example, methylcellulose has excellent thickening, water-retention, emulsifying, suspending, and film-forming properties, which make it widely used in construction, medicine, food, cosmetics, and many other fields.
